Loggers Swing Well On Day One of NWC Championship

PORTLAND, Ore. - Back just nine strokes on the men's side and 13 strokes on the women's side, the Puget Sound Loggers put together a strong first day at the 2010 Northwest Conference Championships on Saturday at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, Ore.

The Logger men were led by a pair of seven-over 79's from Jordan Hodge (Tucson, Ariz.) and Greg Kirkpatrick (Longview, Wash./Mark Morris) as they finished the first day with a 30-over 318.  Marc Phillips (Boise, Idaho/Timberline) and Collin Wulff (Albany, Ore./West Albany) were just one stroke back of Hodge and Kirkpatrick, firing eight-over 80's to help the Loggers.  

Whitworth used a two-over 74 from Ryan Young to take a one-stroke lead following the first 18 holes, firing a 21-over 309.  Linfield used three five-over 77's to pull into second play with a 22-over 310.  The Loggers are third at 318, followed by Whitman (321), Pacific (323), Pacific Lutheran (323), George Fox (327), Willamette (358) and Lewis & Clark (369).

In the women's championship, junior Sarah Bicker (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) shot an 11-over 83 to tie for fourth place following the first round.  Maresa Jenson (Whitefish, Mont.) is currently tied-for seventh place after shooting a 12-over 84.  The Loggers fired a 57-over 345 to take fifth among a highly-competitive field.

Whitworth used an eight-over 80 from Emily Guthrie to pull into first place with a 44-over 332.  George Fox is second at 336, followed by Linfield (339), Whitman (344), Puget Sound (345), Pacific (349), Pacific Lutheran (370), Willamette (418) and Lewis & Clark (465).

The conference will crown a pair of champions on Sunday, with the first group set to tee off at 10:00 a.m. at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, Ore.
