Second half dooms Loggers in 78-72 loss at Whitworth

SPOKANE, WashingtonKeith Shattuck matched his season-high with 19 points and Nick Holden came away with his sixth double-double of the season, but the Puget Sound men's basketball team fell to Whitworth, 78-72, in a Northwest Conference game on the road.

Kohl Meyer scored the final seven points of the first half for the Loggers (8-6, 3-3 NWC) as they carried a 33-29 lead into halftime. The Pirates (14-2, 7-0 NWC), which stand in first place in the NWC, scored the first four points of the second half to even the score just one minute into the period.

Neither side led by more than three points until Whitworth took a 46-42 lead with 13:07 on the clock. The Pirates increased their lead to 11 points, 71-60, with 4:26, but the Loggers quickly battled back.

Puget Sound went on a 9-2 run as Shattuck's layup with 1:27 left cut the Whitworth lead to 72-69. However, the Pirates hit crucial free throws down the stretch to clinch the win.

Holden finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Shattuck tallied 19 points for the third time. Meyer scored 12 points for Puget Sound. The Loggers won the battle on the boards, 35-33, although the Pirates outscored Puget Sound in the paint by a wide margin, 42-20.

Puget Sound will look to get back on the winning track when it plays at Whitman on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
