Barber scores 19 as Loggers fight off Pioneers to win

Portland, Oregon – For the fifth time this season the Puget Sound men's basketball team shot above 50 percent as it went on to defeat Lewis & Clark, 64-62, on Saturday night.

Four Loggers scored in the double-digits in the win. Erin Barber led the team in scoring with 19 points. He also added five assists. Nick Holden scored 14 points on the night and recorded six rebounds. Kohl Meyer led the Loggers in rebounds with eight and added 12 points. Matt Bender also scored 12 points and had one block. 

The Loggers (12-10, 7-7 NWC) opened the game on two early 3-pointers from Holden and James Osorio. The Loggers then went on a 10-4 run with 9:53 remaining in the half. During the run, Bender made two 3-pointers to give the Loggers their biggest lead of the night, 18-11, over the Pioneers (13-10, 8-6 NWC). 

Lewis & Clark closed out the half on an 8-3 run, pulling within two of the Loggers. At halftime, Puget Sound led 31-29. 

The Pioneers tied the game at 31 apiece to open the second half, and then went on an 8-2 run to take a 37-33 lead with 16:55 to go.

Puget Sound then tied the game at 39-39 after a Barber layup and again at 49-49 on two free throws from Meyer.

The Pioneers then went on an 8-0 run to take their biggest lead of the night, 57-49, over the Loggers with 6:19 remaining.

The Loggers came back with a 9-0 run of their own capped off by a jump shot from Holden to retake the lead, 58-57, with 3:58 to go. 

With 2:33 remaining, the Pioneers pulled ahead 59-58. Holden was then fouled and made both free throws, allowing the Loggers to go out in front by one, 60-59. 

Both teams then traded 3-pointers with the Pioneers scoring with 1:45 to go, and the Loggers' Bender coming back to score with 1:28 left. The Loggers still held onto a one-point lead, 63-62. 

Bender then made one free throw with 55 seconds left, to give the Loggers a two-point lead, 64-62.

With under 30 seconds left, the Pioneers stole the ball and took three shots, coming up with three offensive rebounds but couldn't get one to fall as the Loggers went on to win.

The Loggers shot 51.3 percent (20-for-39) from the floor, and held the Pioneers to just 38.6 percent (22-for-57). Both teams recorded 11 assists apiece.

Puget Sound returns home for the final NWC home games of the season as it faces Whitman on Friday, Feb. 20 at 8pm and Whitworth on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 6pm.
