Second-half surge not enough at No. 14 Whitworth

SPOKANE, Washington – After trailing by 13 points at halftime, the Puget Sound men's basketball team shot 58.1-percent from the floor in the second half, but it wasn't enough in a 92-80 loss at No. 14 Whitworth Saturday evening.

Puget Sound (6-5, 0-2 NWC) was in a 40-27 hole at halftime, and the Pirates' (8-3, 2-0 NWC) lead grew to 73-51 midway through the second half.

Despite the large deficit, Puget Sound kept battling. A layup by Max Basile with 9:27 on the clock began an 8-4 run by the Loggers. Puget Sound continued to close the gap when a Cal Hansen bucket six minutes later made Whitworth's lead 81-68.

Things got really interesting when CJ Geathers hit a 3-pointer to make it an 83-72 game with 2:17 left. Whitworth followed with two points, but then Stellan Roberts made it a 10-point game, 85-75, with a trey and 90 seconds left in regulation.

The Loggers sent Whitworth to the line where it made one of two free-throws. Puget Sound stayed hot from distance as John Misel connected from beyond the arc with 44 seconds left, cutting the Pirates' lead to 86-78. However, that's as close as the Loggers would get.

Roberts scored a team-high 17 points, all of which came in the second half. Hansen finished with 12 points. Playing off the bench, Misel scored 12 points and Jourdan Joseph added 10.

The Loggers return to Memorial Fieldhouse to host Pacific Friday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m.
