TUCSON, Arizona – The Loggers continued their winning ways when they took two games in Arizona on Thursday. Puget Sound defeated Denison, 9-4, before taking down La Verne, 7-4, in the afternoon.
Kayla Andrus led the Loggers (5-11), going 4-for-7 on the day, with six RBI. The senior hit a home run, two doubles, and had a sacrifice fly. She also earned a victory in the circle. Erica Gott recorded three runs batted in during the two games. Kristi Nagamine and Jessica Gott had two RBI, while Amber Popovich and Jaci Young each had a run batted in.
Puget Sound 9, Denison 4
The Loggers jumped on the board early, with Kayla Andrus launching a three-run home run in the first inning after Kristi Nagamine and Amber Popovich reached base.
Denison scored one run in the bottom of the third inning, and cut the Loggers lead to 3-2 in the fourth inning.
Puget Sound responded in the fifth inning, scoring two runs to go up, 5-2. Andrus recorded her fourth RBI in the inning.
The Loggers broke the game open in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to give the team a seven run cushion at 9-2. Jaci Young hit an RBI single, while Erica Gott hit a 3-RBI double.
In the Big Red's last chance of game, Denison scored two runs, but the Logger defense shut them down to earn the victory.
Jaci Young (2-7) started the game in the circle for the Loggers. She allowed two runs (one earned) in 4.0 innings to earn the win. She struck out three batters. Erica Gott earned the three-inning save. She allowed two runs (one earned), while striking out one.
Puget Sound 7, La Verne 4
La Verne got on the board first in the second game of the day for the Loggers. Mackenzie Dutton hit an RBI single to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead, however, Puget Sound responded in the bottom half of the inning, tying the game 1-1.
The Leopards again took a one run lead, this time 2-1 in the fourth inning. Once again, the Loggers responded in their own half of the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Puget Sound scored six runs on four hits. Kristi Nagamine and Jessica Gott each recorded 2 RBI in the inning, while Amber Popovich also had a run batted in. The Loggers also took advantage of two La Verne errors in the frame.
La Verne led off the fifth inning with two solo home runs, but the Puget Sound defense held firm to extend the team's winning streak to four games.
Kayla Andrus (1-1) earned the win after throwing 4.0 innings. She allowed just two runs and struck out one. Jaci Young threw the final three innings.
The Loggers will wrap up their Arizona trip on Friday, March 18. The team will take on Wis.-Eau Claire at 11 a.m., before playing Carleton at 1:30 p.m.
