Volleyball drops two in Puget Sound Premiere finale

TACOMA, Washington – Samantha Johnson tallied a career-high 12 kills in a match against Wheaton, and Chloe Akiona-Bannan totaled 33 digs between two matches, but the Puget Sound volleyball team lost its last two matches in the Puget Sound Premiere Saturday.


Puget Sound 2, Wheaton 3 (25-17, 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 15-13)

The Loggers lost the first two sets against Wheaton, but the Maroon & White rallied to force a decisive fifth set.

With Jordan Holman serving, the Loggers broke a 14-14 tie in the third set with a 4-0 run. The rally included two service aces and a kill by Johnson. Puget Sound held on to the lead for the rest of the third set.

In the fourth set, the Loggers did not trail after claiming an 8-7 lead. Puget Sound opened the fifth set with a 4-0 run, but the Thunder chipped away to make it a 12-9 Logger lead. From there, the Thunder claimed the victory by nabbing six of the next seven points.

Johnson amassed 12 kills for the Loggers, while Sarah Blumenfeld contributed 20 assists. Aikiona-Bannan had 16 digs.


Puget Sound 0, Pacific Lutheran 3 (25-23, 25-18, 25-21)

The Logger offense couldn't get clicking as it hit just .041 in a three-set non-conference loss against Pacific Lutheran.

Akiona-Bannan had 17 digs, and Katherine Carley came away with 2.5 of the Loggers' seven blocks.

The Loggers head to Thousand Oaks, California for the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, Sept. 6-7, where Puget Sound plays against Occidental, Claremont-M-S, and Cal Lutheran.
