Loggers set for Cal Lu Fornia Invitational

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team heads to California for four matches in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, Sept. 6-7, at Cal Lutheran.

The opposition

Puget Sound takes on three Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes this weekend, in addition to a matchup with Texas Lutheran (Sept. 6, 2:30 p.m.). The Loggers also square up against Occidental (Sept. 6, 7 p.m.), Claremont-M-S (Sept. 7, 3:45 p.m.), and Cal Lutheran (Sept. 7, 6 p.m.).


Preseason polling

Claremont-M-S, which won the national title in 2017, is currently ranked No. 5 in the nation by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Cal Lutheran and Puget Sound both received votes in the AVCA preseason poll.


Starting with the Premiere

The Loggers posted a 2-2 record during the season-opening Puget Sound Premiere in Memorial Fieldhouse (Aug. 30-31). The Loggers opened the season with wins over Widener and Rose-Hulman, but the following day Puget Sound lost to Wheaton and Pacific Lutheran (non-conference).


Early accolades

Aliah Ayau, Jordan Holman, and Chloe Akiona-Bannan were each named to the Puget Sound All-Tournament Team. Ayau totaled 62 assists on the weekend, Holman led the Loggers with 35 kills, and freshman Akiona-Bannan has a team-best 55 digs through the first four matches.


Looking ahead

Puget Sound makes a return to California for the Leopard Invitational hosted by La Verne, Sept. 13-14. The Loggers begin Northwest Conference action at home against Whitman and Whitman Sept. 20-21.
