TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound volleyball team concluded its first California trip of the season with losses against two teams that are very much in the national conversation.
Puget Sound 0, No. 5 Claremont-M-S 3 (25-18, 25-13, 25-23)
The Loggers were outmatched by the fifth-ranked team in NCAA D-III, as the Athenas rolled in three sets.
CMS (7-1) posted 8.5 blocks to the Loggers' four.
Puget Sound 2, Cal Lutheran 3 (21-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-18, 17-15)
Hardly perturbed by the prior match against CMS, the Loggers put up a battle against Cal Lutheran in the final match of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational. However, the Regals outlasted the Loggers in five sets. Cal Lutheran is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll.
Puget Sound shot out of the gates to claim the first set. Cal Lutheran won the second set by five points, and the third set was a battle.
The Loggers held a 15-10 lead in the third set, but a 5-0 run propelled the Regals to a 17-16 edge. Neither team led by more than a point, until it was 24-24 and Cal Lutheran committed consecutive errors.
The Regals regrouped and forced a decisive fifth set.
Cal Lutheran raced to a 5-0 lead in that fifth set, forcing the Loggers to call a timeout. Following the quick break, Puget Sound went on a 9-3 run. From there, the teams traded 3-0 runs, and the Loggers clung to a 12-11 lead. The Regals took a 15-14 lead, but a kill by Samantha Johnson gave the Loggers life for a moment.
However, the Regals grabbed the next two points to win the match.
Puget Sound returns to California for La Verne's Leopard Invitational, Sept. 13-14. The Loggers take on UC-Santa Cruz, Pomona-Pitzer, Whittier, and La Verne.
