LA VERNE, California – The Leopard Invitational came to an end with the Puget Sound volleyball team losing its last two matches of the weekend against Whittier and La Verne.
Puget Sound 2, Whittier 3 (25-17, 20-25, 17-25, 15-11)
The Loggers' fourth five-set match in a seven-match span did not tilt in Puget Sound's favor, and the Loggers came up short against Whittier.
Puget Sound won both the second and third sets, but a dramatic fourth set shifted momentum into the Poets' favor. After trailing 9-6, Puget Sound went on a 6-0 run to take a three-point lead. Puget Sound's lead grew to 20-14.
However, Whittier battled back with a 6-1 run to take a 24-23 edge. An error by the Poets extended the fourth set, and another error gave Puget Sound a 25-24 lead. From there, Whittier mustered three consecutive kills to force the fifth set.
A Jordan Holman kill late in the fifth set tied the score at 11-11, but Whittier rattled off the next four points to win the match.
Puget Sound managed to hold Whittier to a .090 hitting percentage, while the Loggers hit .137.
Puget Sound 1, La Verne 3 (25-12, 23-25, 25-13, 25-11)
Outside of a second-set victory for the Loggers, La Verne made quick work of Puget Sound in the last match of the Leopard Invitational.
