Loggers have sights set at top of NWC standings

TACOMA, Washington – It is crowded at the top of the Northwest Conference standings, and the Puget Sound volleyball team aims to climb that ladder when it plays at Whitman (Oct. 18) and Whitworth (Oct. 19) this weekend.

The space between

Only two games separate the top four teams in the NWC. Pacific and Whitworth both have 7-1 marks in the conference, and the Loggers are 6-2. Pacific Lutheran holds a 5-3 NWC record.

 

Staying hot

Puget Sound enters the weekend with three consecutive wins, and no NWC team has a better record through its most recent six games than the Loggers (5-1).

 

Logger of the Week

Sarah Blumenfeld was tabbed the Logger of the Week after she helped lead the Loggers to wins over Pacific Lutheran (Oct. 9) and Linfield (Oct. 12). Blumenfeld totaled eight service aces during Puget Sound's 3-1 win over Linfield. She added eight digs and a team-high 31 assists. Against Pacific Lutheran, Blumenfeld notched 21 assists and 10 digs. She currently leads the NWC in in aces (42), and she ranks fifth in assists (428).

 

By any means

Jordan Holman has been called upon to play in different roles throughout the season, and she has answered the call each time. Holman is the only NWC player with at least 190 kills and at least 230 digs.

 

Same kids on the block

Puget Sound ranks second in the NWC for total blocks (148). Melanie Siacotos' 68 blocks ranks fourth in the NWC, and Katherine Carley ranks eighth with 44 blocks.

 

Scouting Whitman (1-13, 1-7 NWC)

The Blues earned their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Lewis & Clark (Oct. 11). Whitman ranks last in the NWC for hitting percentage (.088) and service aces per set (1.13). The Loggers beats the Blues in three sets in Memorial Fieldhouse earlier this season (Sept. 20).

 

Scouting Whitworth (13-5, 7-1 NWC)

The Pirates' only conference loss this season is against George Fox (Oct. 11). Whitworth beat Puget Sound, 3-0, in Memorial Fieldhouse earlier this season (Sept. 21). Emiko Kahler leads the NWC in kills per set (3.82), and Iris Tikhonov has a conference-best 1.07 blocks per set.
