Loggers battle Whitworth to a five-set loss in Spokane

SPOKANE, Washington – Three sets were decided by only two points, but the Puget Sound volleyball team ended up on the wrong side of a closely-contested match, 3-2 (25-13, 27-29, 25-21, 23-25, 15-13) at Whitworth Saturday night.

Following a sluggish start in the first set, Puget Sound (11-11, 6-4 NWC) with new vigor in the second set. Whitworth (15-5, 9-1 NWC) held a 12-8 lead, but Sarah Blumenfeld willed the Loggers to a 4-0 run. Two aces and kill by Blumenfeld, along with a Pirates error, made it a 12-12 set.

Whitworth again looked as though it command of the second set with a 24-20 lead. However, Addison Baker and Jordan Holman alternated kills for four consecutive points to tie the set. Later, a kill by Melanie Siacotos and an error by Whitworth ended the set in the Loggers' favor, 29-27.

The fourth set was a must-win for Puget Sound. Consecutive kills by Holman and a kill by Baker gave Puget Sound an 11-7 edge. The lead grew to 17-11 following back-to-back miscues by the Pirates. Whitworth tied the set, 19-19, but Puget Sound didn't allow the Pirates to take a lead as the Loggers won the set, 25-23, to force a fifth and final set.

Puget Sound claimed a 7-4 lead in the fifth set, and it held a one-point lead, 12-11, following a kill by Tallie Davison. The teams exchanged points before consecutive Whitworth kills ended the match.

Holman finished with a team-high 13 kills, and Blumenfeld had a match-high 34 assists.

Puget Sound returns to Memorial Fieldhouse to host Willamette Friday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
